ENG 100 Assignment #3 Film-Based Argument Due: Draft #1 posted to blog by 11:59 pm on 3/23 Sex Trafficking in the United States In Slumdog Millionaire, screenwriter Simon Beaufoy shares the story of Jamal, a boy who grew up in the slum neighborhoods of India and managed to gain a spot on the gameshow, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire India version. Throughout the film, Jamal is shown as a person who must overcome many obstacles to survive, including an experience of torture when he provides the correct answers to too many gameshow questions. When Jamal and Salim return back to their hometown they witness something terrifying with Jamal friend Latika she was selling her body going by the name Cherry for Maman(Orphange man). He had a lot of man trafficking from all over the world for this business. Women selling their bodies for money to make a living. Trafficking flourishes throughout the world, aided by corruption and neglect by states. Seeking better lives and opportunities, trafficking victims migrate only to find themselves trapped in debt bondage, forced labor, and slavery-like conditions. The United Nations has estimated that 700,000 people are trafficked into forced labor and forced prostitution around the world each year. The government can reduce trafficking in our country by making organizations for United States residents. I think that sex trafficking has to be stopped, one of the main challenges that occur with identifying both survivors and traffickers is that the latter often physically and psychologically manipulate and intimidate the former into secrecy. Some persons who are trafficked do not initially realize the extent of the manipulation and may not identify as victims. It becomes hard for people to help because they are getting mistreated they believe this is normal. Others may protect their trafficker even if they wish to seek help from others. Although there are no signs that a person is being trafficked for sexual purposes the following may be indications like shows signs of physical, emotional, sexual, or mental abuse, and neglect.. Being accompanied by an older male or female who speaks for them. They can have tattoos he/she may be scared to show or explain to others including words that indicate ownership of the name of the trafficker or bar code. If they display unusual anxiety, fear, or inhibition around law enforcement. Also, being resistant to seek medical assistance because they are afraid of the outcome. They have come with a program with for trafficking since it has been so many crimes called Trafficking Protocol, The U.S. Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000 covers all forms of trafficking. It has been ranging from bonded labor to forced prostitution. This has occurred with women, men, girls, and boys are trafficked and forced to work or provide services in or on farms, factories, restaurants, homes, brothels, and bars. They have variety of settings which people can be trafficked, the common element in all trafficking cases. The main goal is exerting the total control over the victim to extract labor or services from him or her. Traffickers around the world make tactics to drawl their victims in situations by physical force. It is vital for the U.S. government to address trafficking in all its horrific forms. Reproductive health risk is especially high for trafficked youth. High numbers of unprotected sexual encounters mean these are more acceptable to STIs or pregnancy, and a lack of access to services, prevents them from seeking testing, treatment, or other care related to outcomes. Trafficked youth also face an increased risk of multiple mental and physical health problems that may compound one another. The other risk factors that may occur are forced abortions since they must make a living. They are more sustainable to rape and sexual assault. Traffickers can be suicidal due to this lifestyle can affect them mentally. When people experience this terrifying experience, it can affect them for a lifetime. You can prevent trafficking by gathering your community together and incorporate education about the prevention of sex trafficking into existing pregnancy prevention programming. This can help young people identify between healthy and unhealthy relationships, the signs and situations that may place them at risk for sexual exploitation, recognize recruitment tactics used by traffickers and pimps, and know how to access resources for support if they are concerned about exploitation in their own or friends’ lives. Because the roots of sex trafficking lie in attitudes regarding gender violence in general, educate young men about gender violence, masculinity, and sexual oppression. Raise awareness about the negative impact that all forms of sexual exploitation have on men, women, and transgender people. Become educated about trafficking networks and warning signs in your community. Set up a local task force to coordinate efforts between youth advocacy organizations, welfare and mental health services, health care centers, law enforcement, juvenile justice, and schools. You must raise awareness of trafficking since they have ton of sources to fight the crime but it has been no great outcome to stop it all at once so that means we have to make a change in the community to make a difference.
