ENG 100 Assignment #3 Film-Based Argument Due: Draft #1 posted to blog by 11:59 pm on 3/23 In Slumdog Millionaire, screenwriter Simon Beaufoy shares the story of Jamal, a boy who grew up in the slum neighborhoods of India and managed to gain a spot on the gameshow, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire India version. Throughout the film, Jamal is shown as a person who must overcome many obstacles to survive, including an experience of torture when he provides the correct answers to too many gameshow questions. When Jamal and Salim return back to their hometown they witness something terrifying with Jamal friend Latika she was selling her body going by the name Cherry for Maman(Orphange man). He had a lot of man trafficking from all over the world for this business. Women selling their bodies for money to make a living. Trafficking flourishes throughout the world, aided by corruption and neglect by states. Seeking better lives and opportunities, trafficking victims migrate only to find themselves trapped in debt bondage, forced labor, and slavery-like conditions(ACF.HHS.GOV). The United Nations has estimated that 700,000 people are trafficked into forced labor and forced prostitution around the world each year(ACF.HHS.GOV). The American government can reduce sex trafficking by creating better outreach programs for sex trafficking victims, raising awareness among community members throughout the country and enforcing strictly federal punishment for sex traffickers. One of the main challenges that occur with identifying both survivors and traffickers. Some people who are trafficked do not initially realize the extent of the manipulation and may not identify as victims. It becomes hard to help people because they are getting mistreated and they believe this is normal. Others may protect their trafficker even if they wish to seek help from others. Although there are no signs that a person is being trafficked for sexual purposes the signs show physical, emotional, sexual, or mental abuse, and neglect. It should be more programs that target current victims to come out to seek help from others. This can become a huge thing in the United States if we don’t put an end to it now. They should put these communities all over the US. One of the programs is located in California called The Dream Center Human Trafficking Program it began in 2010. The program can keep the traffickers away if they’re in a safe environment. While they are becoming part of a healthy community they will aid address pressing legal, medical, and emotional needs. They operate through four phases: Rescue, Rebuild, Restore and Pre-Transition. Each phase was developed to build on each other, and they are designed specifically to help our women process through their trauma in a safe and healthy manner. Since the program has been established they have been able to maintain relationships with local enforcement. These are the specific reasons why they should have more programs like this to help sex traffickers. Sex trafficking should be an issue that is aware in community’s because a victim can be your neighbor or friend. How to make the community aware of this issue you can encourage others to organize a fundraiser and donate the proceeds to an anti-trafficking organizations. They should also encourage schools to collaborate with students and include modern slavery in their curricula. School administrators and staff need to be aware that cases of child trafficking are being reported in communities throughout the nation. This could make the students more aware of what’s going on their community. Is more common they target school-age children. In fact, many child victims of human trafficking are students in the American school system. Some don’t want to face reality of trafficking in their community it can become difficult to comprehend, let alone confront. The community should know that these crimes needs a cause for a call to action. The school system can be safe havens for students, and even more so for some students whose lives are otherwise characterized by instability and lack of safety or security. In these cases, school personnel are uniquely well positioned to identify and report suspected abuse and connect students to services—actions that can prevent trafficking and even save lives. The community can determine the children’s’ future if they don’t come forward to make a change. Most trafficked victims receive five to eight clients a day, but the number of clients is directly correlated with the age of the women. The reproductive health risk behind this terrifying situation. Has high numbers of unprotected sexual encounters mean these are more acceptable to STIs or pregnancy, and a lack of access to services, prevents them from seeking testing, treatment, or other care related to outcomes. The odds of infection were significantly increased among women who had been trafficked at a younger age. Trafficked youth also face an increased risk of multiple mental and physical health problems that may compound one another. Depression is one of the chemical unbalance, but it leaves a person feeling miserable and unhappy. These mental disorders arise in victims because they fear what will be done to their bodies. The overall high rate of mental disorder may also arise from childhood adversity, personality factors, and socio-economic. When people experience this terrifying experience, it can affect them for a lifetime. It also can lead to victims dying from this forced lifestyle and the sexual health caused to victims of human trafficking has become even more evident. This contributes to bringing a lot of awareness to school districts that I stated previously. The people who are forcing these individuals into sex trafficking should get punished for the emotional abuse they have caused and sex transmitted diseases. Luckily it has been federal law established which is called trafficking in persons, is a modern-day form of slavery. It is a crime under federal and international law; it is also a crime in every state in the United States. An organization called The Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act improves the U.S. response to human trafficking. It contains several important amendments that strengthen services for victims. The JVTA also requires the creation of a domestic trafficking Work Cited https://www.acf.hhs.gov/otip/resource/federal-government-efforts-to-combat-human-trafficking https://www.state.gov/j/tip/id/help/ https://safesupportivelearning.ed.gov/human-trafficking-americas-schools https://www.hrw.org/news/2004/07/06/us-efforts-combat-human-trafficking-and-slavery http://www.anderson.edu/humanities-behavioral-science/programs/english/journal/spring-2014/ataylor

ENG 100 Assignment Final Hiraeth Project Due: posted to blog by 11:59 5/10 Summer Day with Grand mom I wake up in my bright white color room. With my window slightly crack so I can feel the beautiful breeze from the summer morning air. I can hear the birds chirping to the Saint Katharine Drexel (Christian Church/School) bells. The radio is playing downstairs the gospel station. I walk into the bathroom to brush my teeth and wash my face. My grand mom walks out of her room to give me a warm hug. Her golden bronze skin would catch the light so beautifully. She had light blonde hair just like Madonna. With light brown hazel eyes with a wide mouth smile and pearly white teeth could light up a room. When she would walk into a room you would catch the aroma of her Musk by Alyssa and Ashley. She had a personality that could command the room. Everyone that would be in her presence loved her company because she kept everyone hysterical. She was intelligent, bright, and funny. My beautiful grandmother Joan Robinson. She went downstairs to make breakfast and coffee. I went towards her room to watch the news. I jumped right across her bed. Her room was everything gold from her dressers, TV stand, and picture which was a peacock. Her room had a strong aroma of Alyssa and Ashley musk. She called for me from downstairs to come and get my breakfast. I grabbed my plate and ate my food in the back kitchen watching the BRATZ on channel 3. I threw my stuff in the trash and headed back upstairs to start my day. Before I got a chance to walk upstairs I heard a knock on the front door. It was my friend Tamia. Tamia grandparents’ house was connected to my house. Me and Tamia grew a huge bond so did our moms. Our mothers built a connection based on being single mothers. She asked me if was I coming outside to play. I let her know I would be out shortly after I got in the shower and got dressed. She said “okay” and walked down my porch stairs. I made my way upstairs to get ready. I ran the warm water in the bath tub and placed my hello kitty bubbles in. I got in the tub washed up. Dried myself off. Headed inside my room. Picked out my clothes and got dressed. I went inside my grand mom’s room to take some of her Musk while she was downstairs. I made my way downstairs to ask could I go outside to play. My grand mom stood in the kitchen getting a snack with her Indian yellow color shirt, brown trousers, and gold slides with gold nail polish on her feet. She instantly said “no” because we were about to run some errands. I couldn’t stay home since my brother was away on a basketball trip and my mom was at work. So, I was forced to go with her. I placed on my shoes from the back kitchen. We headed out the back door to get in her white Mazda with gold trimming with light tan leather seats. When we got in her car I instantly felt my behind and my back burning it was like a microwave on a summer day in the car until she turned on the air and pulled down the windows. She would always pull down the windows while the air was on which was so rare. We slowly pulled out of our driveway and headed towards our first destination. Riding down the street playing her favorite oldies mix. We finally pulled up at the Granite Run Mall to go to Boscov’s her favorite store. Every time we enter the store she would stop at the shoe section and try on a ton of shoes. She finally made a purchase then we headed out to the multiple store section in the mall. My favorite store at the time was JCPenney and Claire’s. I stopped at the stores and made a few purchases. After the time, we spent in the mall we went towards Chic fil a and got something to eat. I always had an 8ct nugget meal with a H-C Fruit Punch and my grandmother would get a chicken sandwich meal with the same drink as me. We sat down and ate our food and made some conversation about school and life. After we were done eating we threw out our food and headed out the door toward the car. She placed her music on and we pulled out the parking lot and making our way home. I ride down the road looking up at the sky imagine that the clouds being shape figures of something odd. We finally pulled up in our drive-way I was so happy we were finally home from our long shopping day. We walked up our walk way towards our door and went in the house. I instantly ran up my stairs and laid across my bed. I thought I was going out to play with my friends but I fell asleep so fast I didn’t even realize. I woke up and I heard people talking from downstairs it was my mom and grandmother discussing her day at work. They suggested that we go get some ice cream from the market so we could watch Dancing with the Stars ’12. My mom suggested that she would go get the ice cream and get some ingredients for dinner while me and my grandmother stayed home. She made her way out the door to go to the market. Me and my grandmother went to sit out on our porch which was narrow with tan bricks, white polls, with a ton of cars riding pass to jump on the 95-route highway. The speed limit was 30 mph but it was so many people riding pass doing 60 mph. It was a lot of accidents and loud music riding pass. But oddly we were so comfortable with this disturbing traffic going pass the house. So, we sat down on our burgundy plastic chairs and glanced at the sun going down. It was shades of blue, purple, pink, and yellow. Then it finally got dark outside. The breeze was swiftly going pass us you could smell all the cookout food from the nearby cookout you could literally taste it. My grandmother tended to rock back and forth but this day she was just staring at the cars riding pass. It seems like she had a lot on her mind. I didn’t know what could have been on her mind that she didn’t even make a joke. My mother shortly came back with the ice cream. She starts making my favorite dish at the time which was fish and chips. While me and my grandmother were sitting on the porch. We hear the phone ringing from upstairs in her room. She couldn’t make it upstairs that fast so the call went straight to voicemail. She sat in her room for a while, me and my mom made conversation about my grandmother going to the hospital getting tested for cancer and she would be expecting a call from the doctor shortly telling her the results. I instantly thought about my grandmother on my father side how she passed away just a year ago from lung cancer stage 4. She was somebody that was huge in my life also. If this was the same result for my other grandmother it would hurt me. My grandmother slowly came downstairs in the kitchen where the strong aroma of fried fish and potatoes was coming from. She asked if we could sit down at the dining room table because she had to let us know something that was important. I wanted to think positive about the outcome results so I walked in the dining room and sat down. She said, “I have just received a called my doctor letting me know the results of the cancer scan”. We waited patiently to hear the results. She states, “They have let me know I have been diagnosed with lung cancer stage 4”. Me and my mom went into instant shock with disbelief that I was hearing these words once again. I asked, “Our there any possible ways they can cure this cancer”. I could feel the tears slowly coming down my face. She said, “They have suggested that I attend radiation at Taylor Hospital”. She agreed that she would go get radiation even if it led to her losing her beautiful blonde hair. My mother agreed she would do anything possible to help with curing this issue by taking off days just making things acceptable so she could be by her mother side while she goes through this terrifying thing called cancer. I couldn’t take anymore hearing about this because I thought it would lead to death. So, I went outside with no destination just walked around to find anything possible to make my mind at ease. By hearing this news, I helped my grandmother with a lot of things if necessary because she was starting to decrease with her health. We said our fellow good byes on March 22, 2012. Aleea Robinson

While in class on April 6, 2017 me and my classmates watched a Netfilx film called Chef’s Table. Here I will be answering the questions below: · Question #1: How does this episode fit into the narrative mode? When the film opens, it shows a scene with a beautiful horizon of multiple colors. It has someone telling about his life story and letting the audience know about his prize moments in life and his bad decisions he made. Mallman had come in a couple of scenes to introduce topics of his life moments also. The format of this movie was created wonderful because at the end he is in the background walking away with fire in the background with the horizon. It had a great message for a lot of individuals. · Question #2: How does Mallman's story connect to the hiraeth story you are writing in this class? Consider his discussions about home and childhood. While Mallman’s was telling his story, I felt like it wasn’t so many connections that I could relate to from my Hiraeth project. The main thing he was talking about was his childhood and what made him the man who he is today. This film gave me understanding that I could give my hiraeth project a twist towards what I’m talking about because I feel like I’m playing it safe where I can give more information about my grandmother and the great memories also letting my audience know about a powerful impact she made on me as a young lady growing up today in this generation. Question #3: What major ideas/themes from this episode connect to ideas/themes from our composition course? Consider Mallmann's argument about composing a good dish, examining his life environments, and being productive. When Mallman won the prize for his potatoes he felt like he accomplished his life achievement that all his teachers had won so he thought his achievements couldn’t go any further he had a fixed mindset. Later on, Mallmann goes down his own path by making his own decisions and living care free which made him start to have a growth mindset to conquer anything he desired. This relates to our composition course where we talked about fixed vs growth mindset. Aleea Robinson

Trafficking flourishes throughout the world, aided by corruption and neglect by states. Seeking better lives and opportunities, trafficking victims migrate only to find themselves trapped in debt bondage, forced labor, and slavery-like conditions. The United Nations has estimated that 700,000 people are trafficked into forced labor and forced prostitution around the world each year. The government can reduce trafficking in our country by making organizations for United States residents. I think that sex trafficking has to be stopped, one of the main challenges that occur with identifying both survivors and traffickers is that the latter often physically and psychologically manipulate and intimidate the former into secrecy. Some persons who are trafficked do not initially realize the extent of the manipulation and may not identify as victims. It becomes hard for people to help because they are getting mistreated they believe this is normal. Others may protect their trafficker even if they wish to seek help from others. Although there are no signs that a person is being trafficked for sexual purposes the following may be indications like shows signs of physical, emotional, sexual, or mental abuse, and neglect.. Being accompanied by an older male or female who speaks for them. They can have tattoos he/she may be scared to show or explain to others including words that indicate ownership of the name of the trafficker or bar code. If they display unusual anxiety, fear, or inhibition around law enforcement. Also, being resistant to seek medical assistance because they are afraid of the outcome. They have come with a program with for trafficking since it has been so many crimes called Trafficking Protocol, The U.S. Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000 covers all forms of trafficking. It has been ranging from bonded labor to forced prostitution. This has occurred with women, men, girls, and boys are trafficked and forced to work or provide services in or on farms, factories, restaurants, homes, brothels, and bars. They have variety of settings which people can be trafficked, the common element in all trafficking cases. The main goal is exerting the total control over the victim to extract labor or services from him or her. Traffickers around the world make tactics to drawl their victims in situations by physical force. It is vital for the U.S. government to address trafficking in all its horrific forms. Reproductive health risk is especially high for trafficked youth. High numbers of unprotected sexual encounters mean these are more acceptable to STIs or pregnancy, and a lack of access to services, prevents them from seeking testing, treatment, or other care related to outcomes. Trafficked youth also face an increased risk of multiple mental and physical health problems that may compound one another. The other risk factors that may occur are forced abortions since they must make a living. They are more sustainable to rape and sexual assault. Traffickers can be suicidal due to this lifestyle can affect them mentally. When people experience this terrifying experience, it can affect them for a lifetime. You can prevent trafficking by gathering your community together and incorporate education about the prevention of sex trafficking into existing pregnancy prevention programming. This can help young people identify between healthy and unhealthy relationships, the signs and situations that may place them at risk for sexual exploitation, recognize recruitment tactics used by traffickers and pimps, and know how to access resources for support if they are concerned about exploitation in their own or friends’ lives. Because the roots of sex trafficking lie in attitudes regarding gender violence in general, educate young men about gender violence, masculinity, and sexual oppression. Raise awareness about the negative impact that all forms of sexual exploitation have on men, women, and transgender people. Become educated about trafficking networks and warning signs in your community. Set up a local task force to coordinate efforts between youth advocacy organizations, welfare and mental health services, health care centers, law enforcement, juvenile justice, and schools. You must raise awareness of trafficking since they have ton of sources to fight the crime but it has been no great outcome to stop it all at once so that means we have to make a change in the community to make a difference. Black or White is the story of a grandfather that is a grieving widower that is drawn into a custody battle over his granddaughter, whom he helped raise her entire life. (Kevin Costner). When her paternal grandmother (Octavia Spencer) seeks custody with the help of her brother (Anthony Mackie), the little girl is torn between two families who love her deeply. With the best intentions at heart, both families fight for what they feel is right and are soon forced to confront their true feelings about race, forgiveness, and understanding. Anchored by an all-star cast and based on real events, the movie is a look at two seemingly different worlds, in which nothing is as simple as black or white.
