ENG 100 Assignment #1 Hiraeth Project Due: Draft #1 posted to blog by 11:59 3/23 Summer Day with Grand mom Waking up in my bright white color room. With my window slightly crack so I can fell the beautiful breeze from the summer morning air. I can hear the birds chirping to the Saint Katharine Drexel (Christian Church/School) bells. The radio is playing downstairs the gospel station. I walk into the bathroom to brush my teeth and wash my face. My grand mom walks out of her room to give me a warm hug. Her golden bronze skin would catch the light so beautifully. With her light brown hazel eyes with a wide mouth smile and pearly white teeth could light up a room. When she would walk into a room you would catch the aroma of her Musk by Alyssa and Ashley. She had a personality that could command the room. Everyone that would be in her presence loved her company because she kept everyone hysterical. She was intelligent, bright, and funny. My beautiful grandmother Joan Robinson. She went downstairs to make breakfast and coffee. I walked towards her room to watch the news. I jumped right across her bed. Her room was everything gold from her dressers, TV stand, and picture which was a peacock. It had a strong aroma of Alyssa and Ashley musk. She called for me from downstairs to come and get my breakfast. I grabbed my plate and ate my food in the back kitchen watching the BRATZ on channel 3. I threw my stuff in the trash and headed back upstairs to start my day. Before I got a chance to walk upstairs I heard a knock on the front door. It was my friend Tamia. Tamia grandparents’ house was connected to my house. Me and Tamia grew a huge bond so did our moms. Since they were single moms with two kids which was a boy and girl created their connection. She was asking was I coming outside to play. I let her know I would be out shortly after I got in the shower and got dressed. She said “okay” and walked down my porch stairs. I made my way upstairs to get ready. I ran the warm water in the bath tub and placed my hello kitty bubbles in. I got in the tub washed up. Dryed myself off. Headed inside my room. Picked out my clothes and got dressed. I went inside my grand mom’s room to take some of her Musk while she was downstairs. I made my way downstairs to ask could I go outside to play. My grand mom stood in the kitchen getting a snack with her Indian yellow color shirt, brown trousers, and gold slides with gold nail polish on her feet. She instantly said “no” because we were about to run some errands. I couldn’t stay home since my brother was away on a basketball trip and my mom was at work. So, I was forced to go with her. I placed on my shoes from the back kitchen. We headed out the back door to get in her white Mazda with gold trimming with light tan leather seats. When we got in her car I instantly felt my behind and my back burning it was like a microwave on a summer day in the car until she turned on the air and pulled down the windows. She would always pull down the windows while the air was on which was so rare. Now we pulled out of the driveway and headed towards our first place. Riding down the street playing her favorite oldies mix. We pulled up at the Granite Run Mall to go to Boscov’s her favorite store. Every time we would enter the store she would stop at the shoe section and try on a ton of shoes. She finally made a purchase then we would head out to the multiple store section in the mall. My favorite store at the time was JCPenney and Claire’s. I would stop at the stores and make a few purchases. After the time, we spent in the mall we go towards Chic fil a and get something to eat. I always would get a 8ct nugget meal with a H-C fruit Punch and my grandmother would get a chicken sandwich meal with the same drink as me. We sat down and ate our food and made some conversation about school and life. After we were done eating we threw out our food and headed out the door toward the car. She placed her music on and we pulled out the parking lot and made our way towards my great aunt Audrey’s house.

Dr. Sabatino Mangini ENG 100 2 Feb 2017 Her subtle golden bronze skin with light brown hazel eyes with a wide mouth smile and pearly white teeth could light up your day. Her life was shortly lived after they found out she was diagnosed with lung cancer stage4. Before my grandmother left this earth, she made a powerful impact on me and great memories. My grandmother Joan Robinson lived under the same roof with me, my mom, and brother. She was considering home to me and to other family members as well. She made our family complete because if anything was going wrong in the household she would always bring us together to hug it out. My household always has been love and happiness as a young child growing up I didn’t know any different. Every summer it was very special and I never wanted it to end. My grandmother would sit on the porch rocking back and forth until the sun went down and the summer breeze flowing throw our hair as we talk about funny memories that she had as a young child. During the summer, we could mostly have crabs every day. We would sit at the back kitchen with our butter and nutcrackers for the crabs. They were messy but always good. On Sunday, standing in the choir singing “Jesus loves me” my grandmother and mother standing up praising the lord. While my big brother just sit in the chair with no urge at being here with his arms cross because he wanted to be outside playing with his friends. The pastor would stand at the podium and give the word. Being so young I wanted to know what was going on so I would grab a bible and flip to the chapter. My grandmother would stand with joy because she would feel the spirit. I always wonder what made her move and understand the word. All the fellow members placed our bible down and the pastor would give his last few words. After the church was over we will meet up with the members of the church and give some warm hugs. I didn’t stay for any after church activities all the time since we would be rushing to prepare for Sunday Dinner. The family walked to the parking lot after Sunday church, and would get into the car. My mom would pull off and head to our favorite market Sam and Sam’s. My grandmother would grab a cart and place me inside and go towards the market. She would grab some ingredients for her smash hamburgers, succotash, and mashed potatoes. Then we would go towards the check out and pay for the groceries. My brother would help with placing the groceries in the trunk. We would head towards home to get ready for dinner. We would pull up in the driveway and head into the house. Place our shoes in the back kitchen before entering the whole entire house. Go upstairs put on comfortable clothes. Take off my stockings and dress which I dislike a lot at a young age. My mom would start the food because my grandmother wasn’t a big fan of cooking when she got older since she had done it mostly all her life. My grandmother would come downstairs sit in her favorite pink love seat in the living/dining room which had a big picture on the wall. A blue lounge chair. In the windows was paintings of a home and a pathway. The blinds were pink and we also had mirrors on a pair of blinds. The couch and dining room had the same material on it which was pink, yellow, and blue fabric was a splash type of look. The table had Chinese culture on it and, we had a Buda in the middle of the floor. She would always ask for me to place the Gospel radio station on. She would sit in her chair and rock back and forth while she would listen to her favorite songs. On August 31, 2003, it was a hot summer day in Chester PA. Mr. Softy was riding down the street playing his favorite theme song. The radio station playing Power 99 in my house. My mother and grandmother preparing for the huge cookout that we are about to have at 4 o’clock. My mother ran out to get some beverages that everybody could have while they were here. While my mom was gone my Aunt, Audrey pulled up in her little black car with her favorite potato salad. She was ready to get everything started so she sparked up the grill. She was putting on hamburgers and hot dogs. My grandmother and aunt called my brother downstairs so he could put the radio in the window. My brother was having so much difficulty with placing it in the window. While all that commotion was going on we hear a knock on our front door it is my neighbor with huggee juices for the kids to drink. After that my mom came back with some beer, coolers, soda, and juice. My brother placed utensils out on the back table where the food would be placed. Now the food was ready and put in pans. My mom best friend pulled up with my god brother and sister. I was so excited since I was so young. So, I begged my mom to bring my pool out so she agreed but only if I could help with placing the tables outside in the backyard. I helped then she put my pool up but the other kids didn't have their bathing suits so it was only me and my kid neighbor in the pool it got boring very fast so we got out. Now, everybody starts to arrive with more drinks and food that's when the party started to begin. All the grown-ups were in my backyard drinking and having fun. This memory stuck with me because since then I have lost a lot of love ones and that's a home I yearn to revisit. I cherished every beautiful memory.
A hearth is homesickness for a home to which you cannot return, a home which maybe never was; the nostalgia, the yearning and grief for the lost places of your past. I will be speaking about my grandmother Joan. She stayed under the same roof with me, my mother and brother. I want to explain that in my hiraeth project. Since this is a home I yearn to revisit since she has passed away. I will give a description of a room where we shared memories at. I’m going to explain my past when we would go to Sunday church and my mom cooking dinner on Sundays’. While my grandmother would rock back and forth in her pink love seat listening to Gospel music. She would tell stories about the old days how it wasn’t so much hatred that it is today and how much fun she would have in the city of Chester. She would explain the scene and make you feel like you were there. She would always provide a sense of comfort for the whole family. It would be just random times she would call out in the hallway for the family to come together to give a group hug and always explain that family was important. If I was worried about something she would always let me know it would be okay. Those times really stick with me until today. In my hiraeth project I will give a sense of understanding of us being a family. I will explain “it won’t always be the perfect family and you will always have your difficulties but you have to always remember that family is key”. By not having my grandmother in my family it tore the whole division of my family apart, but I always remember the great times that we shared on E 22ND St.
