ENG 100 Assignment #3 Film-Based Argument Due: Draft #1 posted to blog by 11:59 pm on 3/23 In Slumdog Millionaire, screenwriter Simon Beaufoy shares the story of Jamal, a boy who grew up in the slum neighborhoods of India and managed to gain a spot on the gameshow, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire India version. Throughout the film, Jamal is shown as a person who must overcome many obstacles to survive, including an experience of torture when he provides the correct answers to too many gameshow questions. When Jamal and Salim return back to their hometown they witness something terrifying with Jamal friend Latika she was selling her body going by the name Cherry for Maman(Orphange man). He had a lot of man trafficking from all over the world for this business. Women selling their bodies for money to make a living. Trafficking flourishes throughout the world, aided by corruption and neglect by states. Seeking better lives and opportunities, trafficking victims migrate only to find themselves trapped in debt bondage, forced labor, and slavery-like conditions(ACF.HHS.GOV). The United Nations has estimated that 700,000 people are trafficked into forced labor and forced prostitution around the world each year(ACF.HHS.GOV). The American government can reduce sex trafficking by creating better outreach programs for sex trafficking victims, raising awareness among community members throughout the country and enforcing strictly federal punishment for sex traffickers. One of the main challenges that occur with identifying both survivors and traffickers. Some people who are trafficked do not initially realize the extent of the manipulation and may not identify as victims. It becomes hard to help people because they are getting mistreated and they believe this is normal. Others may protect their trafficker even if they wish to seek help from others. Although there are no signs that a person is being trafficked for sexual purposes the signs show physical, emotional, sexual, or mental abuse, and neglect. It should be more programs that target current victims to come out to seek help from others. This can become a huge thing in the United States if we don’t put an end to it now. They should put these communities all over the US. One of the programs is located in California called The Dream Center Human Trafficking Program it began in 2010. The program can keep the traffickers away if they’re in a safe environment. While they are becoming part of a healthy community they will aid address pressing legal, medical, and emotional needs. They operate through four phases: Rescue, Rebuild, Restore and Pre-Transition. Each phase was developed to build on each other, and they are designed specifically to help our women process through their trauma in a safe and healthy manner. Since the program has been established they have been able to maintain relationships with local enforcement. These are the specific reasons why they should have more programs like this to help sex traffickers. Sex trafficking should be an issue that is aware in community’s because a victim can be your neighbor or friend. How to make the community aware of this issue you can encourage others to organize a fundraiser and donate the proceeds to an anti-trafficking organizations. They should also encourage schools to collaborate with students and include modern slavery in their curricula. School administrators and staff need to be aware that cases of child trafficking are being reported in communities throughout the nation. This could make the students more aware of what’s going on their community. Is more common they target school-age children. In fact, many child victims of human trafficking are students in the American school system. Some don’t want to face reality of trafficking in their community it can become difficult to comprehend, let alone confront. The community should know that these crimes needs a cause for a call to action. The school system can be safe havens for students, and even more so for some students whose lives are otherwise characterized by instability and lack of safety or security. In these cases, school personnel are uniquely well positioned to identify and report suspected abuse and connect students to services—actions that can prevent trafficking and even save lives. The community can determine the children’s’ future if they don’t come forward to make a change. Most trafficked victims receive five to eight clients a day, but the number of clients is directly correlated with the age of the women. The reproductive health risk behind this terrifying situation. Has high numbers of unprotected sexual encounters mean these are more acceptable to STIs or pregnancy, and a lack of access to services, prevents them from seeking testing, treatment, or other care related to outcomes. The odds of infection were significantly increased among women who had been trafficked at a younger age. Trafficked youth also face an increased risk of multiple mental and physical health problems that may compound one another. Depression is one of the chemical unbalance, but it leaves a person feeling miserable and unhappy. These mental disorders arise in victims because they fear what will be done to their bodies. The overall high rate of mental disorder may also arise from childhood adversity, personality factors, and socio-economic. When people experience this terrifying experience, it can affect them for a lifetime. It also can lead to victims dying from this forced lifestyle and the sexual health caused to victims of human trafficking has become even more evident. This contributes to bringing a lot of awareness to school districts that I stated previously. The people who are forcing these individuals into sex trafficking should get punished for the emotional abuse they have caused and sex transmitted diseases. Luckily it has been federal law established which is called trafficking in persons, is a modern-day form of slavery. It is a crime under federal and international law; it is also a crime in every state in the United States. An organization called The Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act improves the U.S. response to human trafficking. It contains several important amendments that strengthen services for victims. The JVTA also requires the creation of a domestic trafficking Work Cited https://www.acf.hhs.gov/otip/resource/federal-government-efforts-to-combat-human-trafficking https://www.state.gov/j/tip/id/help/ https://safesupportivelearning.ed.gov/human-trafficking-americas-schools https://www.hrw.org/news/2004/07/06/us-efforts-combat-human-trafficking-and-slavery http://www.anderson.edu/humanities-behavioral-science/programs/english/journal/spring-2014/ataylor
